***SPOILERS AHEAD***
The tagline for Little Brother, “An uncomfortably touching comedy”, got it 50% correct, or somewhere around there. While it had some touching moments that fell completely flat, this movie was definitely uncomfortable. For those of you familiar with Eric Andre, you were probably expecting the crude jokes that he is known for. Eric Andre can be an acquired taste, which works perfectly with the movie. We find ourselves identifying with John Cena’s annoyance with Andre’s con to engratiate himself to Cena’s family. As the movie goes on, the crudeness does become endearing as Eric Andre becomes more and more apart of the family. While he isn’t my favorite comedian, Eric Andre is not what is wrong with this movie.
The real problem in this movie for me is John Cena. When Cena first started doing comedy with Blockers, I was a big fan! He was genuinely funny, especially when it came to physical comedy. However, as the years and roles have come and gone, I’ve yet to Cena act in any role that he hasn’t been a roided up tight guy. Okay, now here is where the cinephile is probably saying Ricky Stanicky? Sure, he was a roided out drunk crazy guy in that movie, but it was god awful and he was a large part of the problem with that movie too. I want to see him make a dramatic turn or for him to at least show us a different side of himself.
Now that I’ve had my rant on Cena, I can say even with another actor in Cena’s role, this movie would still be a big pile of poop. Netflix slop galore. A nightmare straight from Scorsese’s dreams. The story is predictable, the background actors are corny and awful, aside from Sherry Cola as Mia who I loved.
All in all I can not recommend not seeing this movie enough. 33/100. Run for the hills!
